Long time franchise professional and Franchise Council of Australia Hall of Fame member, John Brown, has died.

Brown had been involved in franchising for more than 40 years, as a franchisee, franchisor, consultant, and influential FCA member and board member.

In 2023 he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the FCA and in 2010 he was inducted into the Australian Franchise Hall of Fame.

Jay Westbury, FCA CEO, informed FCA members of his death.

John Brown’s contribution to franchising

“John had an extremely fulfilling and long history of success in franchising and his dedication and inclusion of the FCA has been well recognised. He had an enormous positive influence on so many people in franchising, and he will be forever missed and valued,” Westbury wrote.

Brown’s Hall of Fame listing described him as going “far beyond the ordinary expectations of a group member”.

“John has made efforts and taken risks for the betterment of franchising that others wouldn’t,” the listing reads. “His pioneer work at Expense Reduction Analysts is a good example of how he can take a business model and develop a successful franchise system after extensive trialling and testing. A number of times he has personally put his money on the table, said, “I can make this work,” and been true to his promise.”

The Hall of Fame listing highlights not just Brown’s collaborative approach to franchising but his commitment to his own high standards.

“John had no problem rejecting clients if he felt they would do the wrong thing by the industry or if they weren’t going to contribute and become an overall asset,” it reads.

Clayton Treloar, FCA WA Chapter President, said “John was a gentleman, a person of significance and a true friend of franchising. The FCA will miss him deeply as will the WA franchising community.”

Westbury told members, “The FCA has extended our deepest condolences to John’s family. We have been advised that John held a living wake earlier this year and that there will be no funeral, in true John style. Farewell John Brown and thank you for your outstanding contribution to franchising.”
