The most recent review of the Franchising Code suggested the sector could embrace a licensing regime. Now the Licensing Taskforce within The Treasury is considering this option and is seeking views from the franchising sector.

The Treasury has released a consultation paper and is asking for feedback on whether a licensing regime should be established, how it might work, and how to address harms in the sector.

Elements of the regime could include:

  • regulatory oversight
  • information disclosure
  • education and resources
  • dispute resolution
  • business model preconditions.

Stakeholders are invited to contribute to the public consultation.

Treasury launched the consultation paper on 11 November; submissions close on 8 December 2024.
