A KFC drive-thru outlet in western Sydney has had 12 staff test positive for Covid.
KFC Punchbowl has been closed for extensive cleaning, and all customers who attended the outlet over a seven-day period from Tuesday July 27 to Monday August 2 have been instructed to get tested and self-isolate for 14 days, no matter the result of the test.
A spokesperson for KFC said “On August 2, we were informed that a team member from our Punchbowl restaurant had unfortunately tested positive for Covid-19.
“The team member, who has not worked since July 30, has been self-isolating, and all other team members who have been in close contact with this person are also in self-isolation.”
The restaurant has been operating only via the drive thru since July 7.
“We have been working with NSW Health, and as a precautionary measure, have temporarily closed the restaurant and undertaken a deep-clean, said the spokesperson.
This cluster of Covid cases in the Canterbury/Bankstown area reinforces the government’s message that workplace transmission of the Delta strain is a serious concern.
On Friday, when the news broke, New South Wales chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said “It highlights that you have one person who introduced to a workplace, then you have 12 people who have become infected.”
At the press conference on Friday NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the number of Covid cases was expected to rise in Greater Sydney and stressed the need for New South Wales residents to get vaccinated.
Today the Premier reported 283 new cases reported in the preceding 24 hours.
