The final Blockbuster video store in Australia has announced it will close up shop, leaving behind only one store worldwide.
Owned by Lyn and John Borszeky, the store in the Perth suburb of Morley will cease trading at the end of this month, putting an end to Blockbuster’s Australian operation.
In January, the Morley store became the network’s last surviving outlet down under, when the Toowoomba Blockbuster in regional Queensland closed its doors.
Now, only one Blockbuster store remains worldwide, with the Bend, Oregon outlet clinging to life as its counterparts crumble.
The moment the closing down sale signs went up on Friday, customers began expressing their sadness, Ms Borszeky said.
The owner said she felt sorry for film lovers who had no or poor internet connections, and seniors who found the new technology too complicated.
“We put in a pretty good effort to be the last one in Australia, I suppose, but it was going to happen eventually and now is the time,” Ms Borszeky told AAP.
Interested locals can get their hands on Blockbuster signs in the closing down sale, which starts on March 8.
