Wendy’s has appointed a new CEO and president, Robert D. Wright, who recently led a turnaround of the Potbelly sandwich business.
His new position brings him back to the square burger chain, where he held senior leadership roles for the US and Canada, including executive vice president and chief operations officer.
Wright’s leadership also includes senior roles at Checkers, Charleys Philly Steaks and Domino’s.
Chairman of the board, Art Winkleblack, said Wright is “a proven operator and brand builder with deep industry expertise and a results-driven approach that aligns with our strategic priorities”.
On LinkedIn, Wright wrote “I am honored and energised to return to Wendy’s at such a pivotal moment for the brand. Having spent a good portion of my career with the brand, I have seen firsthand what makes Wendy’s special.
“From our commitment to quality to the strength of our people and franchisees, the foundation remains as strong as ever. I am focused on elevating the customer experience, advancing operational excellence, and strengthening our franchisee financial model to deliver sustainable growth.
“The best days for Wendy’s are ahead, and I am excited to get started alongside our teams and franchisees around the world,” Wright said.
The CEO appointment has won the seal of approval from Wendy’s Franchise Association, which represents nearly 80 per cent of franchised restaurants in the US.
Wendy Thomas, WFA vice chair, said “We are encouraged by the opportunity to partner with Bob, Wendy’s leaders and the board of directors in reaffirming the values and culture that built this brand and restoring focus on the principles that have long defined Wendy’s.”
CFO and interim CEO Ken Cook led the business during a transition phase and continues in his CFO role.
