An ex-employee at a Din Tai Fung restaurant, Guoyong Jet Liu, has been awarded $50,588 in wages plus $12,116 in interest for deliberate underpayment.
The wage theft occurred between July 2014 and May 2018. Liu and 16 other workers, mostly from China and Indonesia, were found to have been deliberately underpaid.
A court case resulted in a total of $197,316 in fines paid to the FWO last year which has since been paid to the underpaid employees that the FWO has been able to locate.
The company’s payment of low salaries resulted in $4 million in penalties imposed against the employer and the employer’s general manager and HR co-ordinator.
Since then Din Tai Fung has terminated its franchise rights in Australia.
