The Aussie-born Mexican fast food chain has opened its third US site, a restaurant in Chicagoland’s northwestern Crystal Lake suburb.

GYG Crystal Lake officially opened on Thursday, 18 May for dine-in, takeaway, and drive-thru orders
followed by a full menu offer including breakfast the following day.

The brand’s second American outlet opened in Schaumburg in January 2023.

Focus on Chicago area

Steven Marks, Guzman y Gomez founder and CEO, said Chicago is the perfect choice for GYG’s US expansion.

“Chicago is one of the culinary capitals in the US and for good reason – it is surrounded by the best
quality ingredients. At GYG, we are all about the food and ensure that we are working with the best
partners to give our guests a memorable experience every single time.”

The business has been trading in the Chicago area since 2020.

Earlier this month Marks revealed he would step away from the CEO role with the brand he founded in 2006.

“I am not leaving the business, I’m just changing the way I help this incredible team,” he said.

In October 2022 the business was valued at $1.5 billion, when Aware Super led a secondary share sale in the Mexican fast-food chain.

Guzman y Gomez now operates 171 restaurants across Australia, Singapore, Japan and the US.
