Strong Pilates signs Japan master franchise deal, adds clothing

Strong Pilates has signed a master franchisee for Japan, with plans to roll out 50 studios over the next five years.

Strong Pilates Japan (SPJ) will develop and operate studios, sell products and services, and assist franchisees grow their businesses.

John B. Boardman is the master franchisee, chair and CEO of SPJ. He brings extensive experience in one of Asia’s most dynamic markets.

“As the master franchisee for Japan we are thrilled to soon introduce the highly compelling Strong Pilates brand, innovative workout, and forward thinking philosophy and lifestyle to the Japanese market,” he said.

Pilates growth in Japan

Boardman expects the Pilates and HIIT offering to appeal to both men and women in Japan who are keen to expand their fitness routine.

In Japan Pilates and HIIT training have been booming. Factors such as increased health consciousness, greater emphasis on work-life balance and the advancement of women in the workforce have boosted the disciplines’ popularity.

According to Strong Pilates, participation in both Pilates and HIIT classes in Japan is expected to continue to grow steadily in the future.

The Australian Pilates chain has launched more than 50 studios globally since 2019. There are studios in New Zealand, UK, Singapore and Canada and a 150-studio pipeline. New areas of growth include Asia, Europe and the US.

The franchise network has achieved 350 per cent year-on-year growth.

Athleisure range with The Upside

The brand has also just launched a partnership with iconic fashion label The Upside. Together they have designed a fashion-forward athleisure range, created for Strong instructors and for the community.

Each of the sustainably-produced pure cotton items features custom designed branded artwork, and is designed for breathable quick drying comfort.

The new range is on sale until 4 February in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It is also available via the Pilates’ chain’s website.
